Early Symptoms of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Recalled by 337 SLE Patients

    The study surveyed 333 German SLE patients to identify early symptoms of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) from the patient perspective. The majority of respondents were female (93%) with a mean age of 36 at diagnosis and a mean disease duration of 17 years. Common early symptoms included fatigue (89%), joint pain (87%), sensitivity to sunlight (79%), myalgias (76%), rash (71%), fever (54%), Raynaud's phenomenon (52%), and hair loss (51%). Additionally, 22% reported fibromyalgia, and 37% experienced shortness of breath. The study highlighted the importance of patient-reported symptoms in developing more accurate SLE classification criteria, noting that gastrointestinal and nervous system symptoms were also frequently mentioned.
