TLDR Early hair loss in young males may not be clearly linked to insulin resistance or metabolic syndrome.
This study investigated the association between insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and early onset androgenetic alopecia (AGA) in young males aged 18 to 35. It involved 30 participants with AGA and 30 controls. The study found that participants with AGA had higher mean diastolic blood pressure, more frequent family history of AGA, and significantly higher total and free testosterone levels compared to controls. However, there was no significant difference in insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome criteria between the two groups. The prevalence of insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome increased with the severity of AGA. The study concluded that more research is needed to determine if early AGA is linked to dyslipidemia due to androgens, insulin resistance, or metabolic syndrome, as a clear role of insulin resistance or metabolic syndrome was not established.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
