TLDR People with early psychosis eat more calories, saturated fat, and sugar, and the drug olanzapine may lead to eating even more calories.
The study investigated the dietary habits of 67 subjects with early psychosis and found that they consumed more calories, saturated fat, and refined sugar, regardless of their clinical subtype. The antipsychotic drug olanzapine was associated with an increased calorie intake, while aripiprazole was associated with a lower consumption of refined sugar. These findings suggest that both dietary habits and specific antipsychotic treatments, particularly olanzapine, may contribute to the elevated risk of obesity and metabolic syndrome in patients with early psychosis.
