TLDR Graves' disease is a common cause of hyperthyroidism, mainly in women, treated with medication, iodine, or surgery, with varying outcomes.
Graves’ disease is the leading cause of hyperthyroidism, accounting for 60%-80% of cases, with a higher prevalence in women. Diagnosis involves medical history, physical examination, and tests such as thyroid function tests and antibody testing. Treatment options include anti-thyroid medication, radioactive iodine treatment, and surgery. Complications can include Graves’ ophthalmopathy, thyroid dermopathy, cardiovascular effects, and thyroid crisis. The prognosis varies, with adults more likely to achieve remission than children.
