TLDR The Brigham Eyelash Tool for Alopecia (BELA) is a reliable way to measure eyelash loss in alopecia areata patients.
The Brigham Eyelash Tool for Alopecia (BELA) was developed and validated as a measure for quantifying eyelash hair loss in patients with alopecia areata (AA). BELA evaluates the percentage distribution and grade of eyelashes on the upper lash lines, with scores assigned by six dermatologists to 60 images of patients with AA. The tool demonstrated high inter- and intrarater reliability, with intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) for absolute agreement of 0.91 for the right eye, 0.77 for the left eye, and 0.88 overall. Although validated using photographs, BELA provided a standardized method for assessing eyelash loss and disease progression, with future research aimed at further validation and implementation.
