TLDR Dermoscopy can help diagnose tinea capitis but should be used with other tests.
The document discussed the use of dermoscopy in diagnosing tinea capitis, traditionally diagnosed through KOH staining and culture examination. A case of a 22-year-old woman with systemic lupus erythematosus and alopecia was examined, revealing specific dermoscopic features like "comma hairs" and "corkscrew" patterns. The study reviewed three articles, finding that "comma hairs" had a sensitivity of 60-66% and specificity of 100%, while "corkscrew" patterns had a sensitivity of 20-80% and specificity of 83-100%. The findings suggested that combining dermoscopy with clinical and microscopic examinations could enhance diagnosis, though further research was needed to establish dermoscopy as a standalone diagnostic tool for tinea capitis.
