TLDR Dermoscopy can effectively identify Malassezia folliculitis.
This observational study conducted in New Delhi, India, involved 69 patients suspected of having Malassezia folliculitis, with 45 confirmed cases through KOH examination. The study highlighted the utility of dermatoscopy in diagnosing Malassezia folliculitis, revealing consistent features such as foliculocentricity and perilesional erythema in all cases. Additional findings included various vascular structures and gray-brown scales in a significant number of patients. The study emphasized the importance of recognizing these dermatoscopic features to differentiate Malassezia folliculitis from similar conditions like acne vulgaris and to guide appropriate antifungal treatment.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
