TLDR Dermatologists are key in detecting and managing OCD and BFRBs by working with psychiatrists.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) are increasingly recognized in dermatology due to their cutaneous manifestations, such as alopecia and excoriations. Despite affecting up to 12% of the population, these disorders often go undetected because of stigma and a focus on skin symptoms. Dermatologists play a crucial role in early detection and management, using tools like dermoscopy and full-body examinations. While behavioral therapies show promise, pharmacologic treatments have variable success. The review emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration between dermatology and psychiatry to improve treatment outcomes by addressing both physical and psychological aspects of these conditions.
