TLDR Skin issues are common in kids with chronic kidney disease.
In a study of 70 pediatric patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), skin, nail, and hair abnormalities were found to be common. Xerosis (78.6%) and pruritus (62.9%) were the most frequent skin issues, while hair and nail abnormalities were less common, with 4 patients experiencing hair loss. The study found no significant differences in these abnormalities across CKD stages or dialysis modalities. However, xerosis was linked to lower hemodialysis efficacy (Kt/V) and higher white blood cell counts, while pruritus was associated with higher hemoglobin levels.
