TLDR Some COVID-19 pneumonia patients in Veracruz, Mexico, had skin issues, with reversible hair loss linked to disease severity.
In a study conducted in Veracruz, Mexico, from April to June 2020, 100 adult patients with COVID-19 pneumonia were observed for dermatological manifestations. The most common dermatological manifestation was morbilliform viral exanthema, found in 18% of patients, all of whom had severe pneumonia. Diffuse partial alopecia was observed in 7% of patients, and manifestations of lividity and maceration in 1%. Of the alopecia cases, 6% were reversible androgenetic alopecia, which manifested during the acute stage of pneumonia, and 1% was persistent alopecia areata. The study concluded that while dermatological manifestations were low in incidence, the presence of reversible androgenetic alopecia was associated with the severity of the disease and could potentially act as a marker of severity.
