The 2019 study "Dermatological manifestations in patients with chronic kidney disease" by Dr. Laxminarayana Bhat explored the prevalence and pattern of skin disorders among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The study found that skin conditions in patients with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) are diverse and can significantly impact the quality of life. Early diagnosis can facilitate treatment, reducing disease-associated morbidity. The study suggested preventative and remedial measures such as using emollients for xerosis, sunscreens and sun avoidance for pigmentary changes and skin cancers, maintaining oral hygiene to prevent oral mucosal changes, nutritional supplementation to prevent vascular fragility, angular cheilitis and hair loss, and early recognition and treatment of fungal infections like onychomycosis and tinea pedis, which are more common in CKD patients.
