TLDR Toy poodles may develop harmless mineral deposits around hair follicles as they age.
The study investigated the effects of chronic oral administration of mibolerone on bitches of seven different breeds, focusing on toy poodles. Over 9.6 years, 22 toy poodles exhibited dermal perifollicular mineralization, characterized by mineral deposits around hair follicles, composed of calcium, phosphorus, and iron. Despite the mineralization, most affected poodles did not show significant skin abnormalities or alopecia, suggesting the lesion was not linked to mibolerone treatment. The mineralization was not observed in other breeds, indicating it might be a breed-specific condition, possibly related to age, as it was recognized as a senile change in poodles. The study found no significant differences in serum calcium, phosphorus, or thyroid and parathyroid conditions between affected and unaffected poodles, and the condition was not linked to diet or propylene glycol, the drug vehicle.
