TLDR High Demodex mite density may be linked to sebaceous hyperplasia.
The study investigated the presence of Demodex mites in sebaceous hyperplasia (SH) by comparing 11 patients with SH to 40 controls. It found that the prevalence and density of Demodex were significantly higher in SH patients (100% prevalence, mean density of 28.9/lesion) compared to controls (85% prevalence, mean density of 2.1/follicle). Histopathological analysis revealed abnormal keratinization, follicular plugging, and inflammatory infiltration in SH lesions. The findings suggested a possible relationship between high Demodex density and the development of SH skin lesions.
