Cutaneous Keratocyst and Steatocystoma Unified as Sebaceous Duct Cyst: A Hamartoma Resembling the Sebaceous Duct

    Mani Makhija
TLDR Cutaneous keratocyst and steatocystoma should be called "sebaceous duct cyst" due to their similarities.
The document discussed the proposal to unify cutaneous keratocyst and steatocystoma under the name "sebaceous duct cyst" due to their similar histological features. Two cases were presented: a 29-year-old male with a facial cyst and a 27-year-old female with multiple papules on the abdomen. Both cases showed cysts lined by thin stratified squamous epithelium with a crenated surface, resembling a sebaceous duct. The presence of sebaceous lobules was not deemed essential for diagnosis. The study suggested that these cysts are more common than previously recognized and should be classified based on their resemblance to normal adnexal structures, specifically the sebaceous duct, thus warranting a unified nomenclature.
