TLDR Hair follicle cells can be grown without extra support and may help in wound healing.
Dispersed hair follicle cells from plucked hairs were successfully cultured on collagen type IV without the need for a biological feeder layer. The study determined that the optimal calcium concentration for these cultures was 0.3-0.5 mM, which facilitated the best colony formation and growth, resulting in large colonies with a paving stone-like cell arrangement. The researchers proposed using these cultured hair follicle cells as an alternative to cultured epidermal keratinocytes for treating missing skin in wound dressings.
