Covid-19, Diagnostic History And Mortality From Medicare 1999-2021, In An All-Cause Mortality Approach

    Nick Williams
TLDR Covid-19 worsens existing health issues and long-term effects are predictable.
The study analyzed Medicare data from 1999 to 2021 to assess the impact of pre-existing conditions on Covid-19 mortality, finding that both the primary infection and exacerbations of conditions like cancer, diabetes, cardiac, and respiratory diseases influenced mortality. Using a Generalized Linear Model, it identified that prior clinical risk factors significantly contributed to mortality outcomes, with specific conditions such as certain cancers and cardiac issues increasing mortality odds. The study highlighted the importance of understanding these risk factors for improving patient management and informing future research. It also noted that older adults had smaller diagnostic breadths and that conditions common in institutionalized populations provided predictive value for Covid-19 mortality. The research emphasized the significance of environmental and clinical settings in Covid-19 exposure, particularly for vulnerable populations like those in nursing homes.
