TLDR Dermatologists should know about cosmetic science and aesthetics because patients care about skin appearance and health.
In the 1996 article "Cosmetic science and aesthetics in dermatology," W.A.D. Griffiths argued for the importance of dermatologists being knowledgeable about cosmetic science and aesthetics. Griffiths highlighted that dermatology encompasses not only the treatment of skin diseases but also the understanding of skin health and aesthetics. He pointed out that many patients seek dermatological advice with the aim of achieving or maintaining an aesthetic ideal, which often aligns with having smooth, clear, and blemish-free skin. The article discussed the intersection of cosmetic science with dermatology, noting that a survey of around 2000 French dermatologists found that three-quarters had been asked cosmetic questions by patients, and most felt their responses were inadequate. The British Society for Cosmetic Science in Dermatology (BSCSD) was mentioned as an example of a group formed to bridge the gap between dermatology and cosmetic science. Griffiths also described the study of skin's biomechanical properties, such as viscoelasticity, as an area where collaboration between scientists and dermatologists has been beneficial. The use of techniques like indentometry was cited as valuable for understanding and treating various dermatoses. The article concluded that cosmetic science and aesthetic considerations are integral to the field of dermatology.
