TLDR Older people with type 2 diabetes are more likely to have gum disease.
The study conducted by Mahmud, Alif, Tarafder, and Hossain in 2013 investigated the relationship between periodontal diseases and chronological age among 120 type 2 diabetes mellitus patients at the National Healthcare Network (NHN) Mirpur Centre, Dhaka. The study, which took place over six months from August 2011 to January 2012, found a significant association between the patients' chronological age and the manifestation of periodontal diseases (p=0.004). The data suggested that for each year increase in age, there was a 0.20% increase in the occurrence of periodontal diseases. The researchers concluded that periodontal diseases could negatively impact the metabolic control of diabetes, and conversely, treating periodontal disease and reducing oral inflammation might have a positive effect on the diabetic condition.
