TLDR In 1995, international medical graduates did better than U.S. graduates on a medical exam.
In 1995, international medical school graduates (IMGs) outperformed U.S. medical school graduates on the Internal Medicine In-Training Examination across all three postgraduate year (PGY) levels. The exam was taken by a total of 15,119 residents, with IMGs scoring mean values of 61.9, 66.7, and 70.7 for PGY-II, PGY-I, and PGY-III, respectively, compared to U.S. graduates' scores of 60.0, 65.9, and 69.2. The differences were statistically significant (P<0.001), suggesting a trend of improving performance by IMGs and raising questions about the quality of training and potential factors contributing to these results.
