Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia and Adrenal Myelolipoma - Causal or Accidental Relationship?

Alexandra Vieira, Isabel Paiva, Jacinta Santos, Márcia Alves, Francisco Carrilho, Manuela Carvalheiro
The document described 25 cases in the literature associating congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) with adrenal myelolipoma, a rare benign tumor composed of adipose and mature hematopoietic tissue. The most accepted theory for its origin was the metaplasia of reticuloendothelial cells in blood capillaries in response to infections, stress, or necrosis. In a small number of cases, there was coexisting hypersecretion of ACTH. The authors presented a case of a 56-year-old woman referred to endocrinology for genital virilization, who exhibited short stature, melanoderma, hirsutism, androgenic alopecia, and genital ambiguity.
