TLDR A new type of alopecia areata, called the "confetti variant," causes small bald spots that often heal on their own in a few months.
This study identifies a novel variant of alopecia areata, termed the "confetti variant," characterized by small alopecic macules that spontaneously resolve within months. Conducted as a single-center retrospective chart review, the study included 69 pediatric patients, predominantly female (71%) and Hispanic/Latinx (58%), with a median age of onset at 7.1 years. The lesions, averaging 9.8 mm in size, were primarily located near the parietal and vertex scalp. Spontaneous resolution was observed in 50% of cases with a median follow-up of 3.5 months. This research highlights the distinct nature of this variant within the alopecia areata spectrum.
