TLDR Skin issues and diarrhea can signal ulcerative colitis, needing further checks.
A case study reported a middle-aged man with alopecia universalis and a 6-year history of intermittent diarrhea, who was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis through colonoscopy and biopsy. Treatment with azathioprine and mesalamine led to hair regrowth. The study highlighted the importance for clinicians to recognize that skin manifestations, alongside diarrhea, could indicate extraintestinal manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease, such as ulcerative colitis, and should prompt further investigation.
