TLDR Using scalp micropigmentation (a special tattoo technique) with hair transplantation can effectively treat hair loss, especially for those with low donor density or those unsuitable for only hair transplantation.
The 2016 study "Combining Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) and Hair Transplantation" involved 100 participants and explored the benefits of combining SMP and hair transplantation for hair loss treatment. SMP, a specialized tattoo technique that mimics closely cut hairs, was found to enhance the natural and dense appearance of hair when combined with hair transplantation. The study concluded that this combined approach could be a comprehensive solution for hair loss, especially beneficial for patients with low donor density and those not suitable for hair transplantation alone. The authors, who had been performing permanent SMP for 6 years on hundreds of patients, reported no regrets from patients. The document also highlighted the importance of patient and physician education about SMP, and its cost and time investment.
