TLDR The conclusion is that a team of skin doctors and psychiatrists is needed to better treat patients with mind-skin disorders.
The document presents seven clinical cases of psychocutaneous disorders from the University Hospital Center “Mother Teresa” in Tirana, Albania. These disorders, including trichotillomania, neurotic excoriation, dermatitis artefacta, and parasitic delusion, are explored in the context of psychodermatology, which studies the interaction of the mind and skin. The patients exhibited symptoms like uncontrolled itching, pain, burning, and numerous wounds on the body and head, and were treated with a combination of drug therapy and psychiatric consultation. The study emphasizes the need for a multidisciplinary team for proper management of these disorders. Two specific disorders, Delusional Parasitosis and Skin-Picking Disorder, are discussed in detail, highlighting the need for simultaneous dermatologic and psychotropic treatment, and the importance of dermatologists being prepared for prolonged treatment with repeated relapses. The document concludes by stressing the need for more knowledge in psychodermatology and a comprehensive approach involving both dermatologists and psychiatrists to improve patients' quality of life.
