TLDR Nail changes in alopecia areata are common and may indicate severity and genetic risk.
This study at Al-Kadhmia Teaching Hospital in Baghdad examined nail involvement in 100 adult patients with alopecia areata (AA). Nail changes were observed in 44% of participants, with pitting being the most common. Nail involvement was more prevalent in patients with multifocal AA and those with severe AA, and it was significantly associated with a positive family history, indicating a potential genetic predisposition. However, no significant associations were found with comorbidities like atopic dermatitis and thyroid disorders. The findings suggest that nail evaluation could be useful in assessing AA severity and familial risk, aiding in clinical management.
