TLDR Low iron levels may be linked to hair loss in women.
This study examined 263 female patients with chronic telogen effluvium (CTE) to explore the association between CTE and serum ferritin levels. The average age of participants was 28.92 years, with 57% experiencing bitemporal thinning and 68% having short growing hairs in the frontal/bitemporal region. A significant finding was that 86% of the patients had serum ferritin levels below 40 mcg/L, despite only 32% having anemia. This suggests a potential link between low iron stores and CTE, highlighting the need for further case-control studies to confirm the role of iron deficiency in hair loss.

A 29-year-old woman is experiencing gradual hair thinning since age 15, suspects Androgenic Alopecia, and has tried 5% minoxidil with little success. She has purchased various hair loss treatments including minoxidil, dutasteride, finasteride, and spironolactone, but is cautious about starting them due to potential interactions with her ADHD medication.
