TLDR Low BMI and cold exposure increase the risk of chilblains.
The study investigated the demographical and clinical characteristics of 69 patients with chilblains in Diyarbakir, Turkey, and evaluated body mass index (BMI) as a risk factor. The majority of patients were female (65.2%) with a mean age of 21 years. Common symptoms included itching (71.2%), pain (51.6%), and burning (31.3%), with 61.3% experiencing recurrent lesions each winter. The mean BMI of patients was significantly lower (20.5) compared to controls (22.4), suggesting that low BMI might be a risk factor for developing chilblains. The study concluded that both external cold exposure and personal susceptibility contribute to the condition.
