TLDR Low BMI and cold exposure increase the risk of chilblains.
The study on chilblains in Diyarbakir, Turkey, involving 69 patients, found that the condition predominantly affected young females with a mean age of 21 years. Symptoms included itching, pain, and burning. A significant finding was that patients had a lower mean BMI (20.5) compared to controls (22.4), suggesting low BMI as a risk factor. Recurrence of lesions every winter was common, reported by 61.3% of patients. The study concluded that low BMI and cold exposure are significant risk factors for developing chilblains, and persistent cases may indicate underlying systemic diseases, necessitating detailed investigations.
