TLDR Hair highlighting can cause serious scalp burns if not done carefully.
In 2007, a case was reported of a full-thickness chemical scalp burn resulting from a hair highlighting procedure, marking the first such case in the American literature. The hair highlighting process involves using chemical solutions to change hair color, which can also be caustic to the scalp. The incidence and severity of such injuries were not well-documented at the time. The case highlighted the importance of following instructions carefully to avoid similar injuries. The report aimed to serve as an educational resource about the risks associated with the common practice of hair highlighting.
