TLDR Overdosing on veterinary albendazole can cause severe health issues like hair loss and low blood cell count.
A 53-year-old man with delusional parasitosis ingested a massive overdose of veterinary albendazole, totaling 113.6 g over 3 weeks, which led to severe toxicity, including pancytopenia, hepatitis, and alopecia. This far exceeded the normal maximum daily dose of 800 mg. He experienced significant hair loss, a rash, low white blood cell count, and elevated liver enzymes. Despite complications like fever and Clostridium difficile infection, he recovered with supportive care. This case underscored the dangers of self-diagnosis and purchasing unregulated drugs online.
