TLDR Obese women with PCOS have more cardiovascular risk factors, and waist-to-stature ratio is a better health marker than waist-to-hip ratio.
This study investigated cardiovascular risk factors in 375 Bulgarian women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and/or obesity. It found significant differences in carbohydrate metabolism, blood pressure, lipid profile, liver steatosis rate, liver enzyme levels, and hematological results between lean and obese women with PCOS. Obese women without PCOS did not show significant differences in their oral glucose tolerance test (OGGT) compared to obese women with PCOS. The waist-to-stature ratio (WSR) was a better marker for an unfavorable metabolic profile than the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), as it correlated more strongly with baseline insulin resistance index (IRI) levels and lipid profiles.
