TLDR Some calcium supplements have more calcium than their labels say, and a few have less.
A study evaluated the quality of 108 calcium food supplements in Poland, comparing the actual calcium content to the manufacturers' declarations. Using atomic absorption spectrometry, it was found that 1.9% of the samples had lower calcium content than declared, while 54.6% had higher content. The study concluded that the quality of these supplements should be monitored for patient safety, as chronic use of supplements with higher than declared calcium content could lead to hypercalcemia. The study also found that the quality of these supplements varied significantly across different factors such as pharmaceutical form, price, and age group. For example, 66.67% of capsules and 59.18% of tablets had higher calcium content than declared, while 100% of supplements for children were above the norm.
