TLDR Certain compounds reduced hamster flank organ size by inhibiting 5α-reductase, like finasteride, without affecting androgen receptors.
The study investigated the inhibitory effects of various progesterone derivatives on the 5α-reductase enzyme and their impact on hamster flank organ size. Compounds with a chlorine substituent at C-6 (12a–12d) demonstrated higher antiandrogenic activity compared to those without a halogen (14a–14d). However, derivatives lacking the chlorine substituent exhibited greater 5α-reductase inhibitory activity. The study concluded that these compounds reduced the diameter of hamster flank organs by inhibiting 5α-reductase activity, similar to finasteride, without binding to androgen receptors.
