TLDR Using a blow dryer in a certain way can cause localized hair damage with bubble formation inside the hair.
A 23-year-old white woman experienced a sudden breakage of hair along her anterior hairline after shampooing, which was attributed to her hair styling technique involving a hot air blow dryer and a round brush. Physical examination revealed an oval-shaped area of coarse, crinkled, shortened hairs, without signs of alopecia or scalp infection. Light microscopy of the broken hairs showed multiple bubbles within the hair shafts, some causing distension, but no trichorrhexis nodosa was observed. This case suggests that the use of a blow dryer in a specific manner can lead to localized hair damage characterized by bubble formation within the hair shafts.
