TLDR Hypothyroidism may cause vertigo symptoms like BPPV.
This case report discusses a 56-year-old female patient who presented with symptoms of Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) and was subsequently diagnosed with hypothyroidism, specifically Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. The report suggests a potential link between BPPV and hypothyroidism, highlighting that thyroid disorders may contribute to vestibular disturbances through mechanisms such as autoimmune dysfunction and changes in endolymphatic flow. The patient experienced improvement in vertigo symptoms following vestibular physical therapy and treatment with levothyroxine. The report emphasizes the importance of considering hypothyroidism as a possible underlying cause of BPPV to enhance patient care.
