TLDR Recognizing unusual symptoms can lead to early diagnosis and effective treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus.
This case study describes a 16-year-old girl with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who presented with atypical symptoms of bilateral periorbital swelling and localized alopecia. Despite normal renal, hepatic, and thyroid functions, laboratory tests revealed pancytopenia and elevated autoimmune markers, leading to an SLE diagnosis. Treatment with methylprednisolone and hydroxychloroquine resulted in significant improvement, including resolution of swelling and hair regrowth. The case emphasizes the importance of recognizing atypical SLE presentations for early diagnosis and effective treatment to prevent complications.
