TLDR Platelet-rich plasma may improve hair density in androgenetic alopecia patients.
The paper "Autologous platelet-rich plasma as a potential therapeutic tool in androgenetic alopecia" from 10 years ago discusses the use of autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in mesotherapy for patients with androgenetic alopecia. The study collected 31 patients with androgenetic alopecia who did not receive autologous platelet-rich plasma mesotherapy (group 0) and 31 patients who did receive it (group 1). Trichoscan was performed in both groups at a basal visit and 12-month visit where data including the hair number, hair density per square centimeter, anagen and telogen percentage, and percentage of terminal and miniaturized hair were analyzed. Patients treated with autologous platelet-rich plasma mesotherapy showed statistically higher hair density per square centimeter and a borderline statistically significant difference in hair number than in controls. The study supports the possible clinical application of autologous PRP in patients presenting with androgenetic alopecia.
