TLDR Lifestyle changes and medical treatment can help manage PCOS symptoms in young adults.
The study surveyed 680 young adults aged 18-22 in Angamaly, India, and found that 5% had Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). Among those with PCOS, the prevalence of symptoms was high, with 96% experiencing irregular periods, 92% experiencing hair loss, 30% having excess facial/body hair, and 19% having dark skin patches. Dietary habits showed a preference for non-vegetarian food, with 92% using coconut oil and 87% using sunflower oil for cooking. Bakery products were consumed by 93% of participants, and processed foods by 70%. Less than half (44%) consumed milk daily. The study concluded that lifestyle changes such as awareness, exercise, yoga, meditation, and physical activity, along with medical treatment, could help manage PCOS symptoms. Various treatment options including Ayurveda, homeopathy, natural therapy, and allopathy were also noted.
