TLDR Acne is more common and severe in females, often with pre-menstrual flare-ups and associated with seborrhea.
The study conducted 13 years ago by Ala’a Abdulrahman Sulaiman and Intiha Mohamad Almousuly at Rizgary Teaching Hospital in Erbil involved 200 patients with acne. The results showed that the majority of patients were female (145 out of 200), and acne of moderate severity was the most common type, found in 57% of the patients. 64% of the patients had mixed types of lesions. Seborrhea was present in 84% of patients, and hirsutism was found in 44% of female patients. A pre-menstrual flare-up was observed in 73% of females. The study found a significant relationship between gender and the degree of severity of acne, as well as between seborrhea and acne severity.
