TLDR Androgen receptor overexpression can increase prostate cancer cell growth even without hormones.
The study investigated the effects of androgen receptor (AR) overexpression in prostate cancer, focusing on cell proliferation and AR translocation to the nucleus. Using two AR overexpressing and two control LNCaP derived cell strains, the research found that AR overexpression led to increased proliferation, especially in 10 nM DHT and 1 nM R1881 conditions, and sustained proliferation even in starvation conditions. The AR translocation to the nucleus occurred within an hour and was more efficient in overexpressing strains, correlating with AR expression levels. These findings suggested that AR overexpression enhanced cell proliferation and nuclear translocation efficiency, contributing to the progression of prostate cancer.
