The Use of Anabolic Steroids by Bodybuilders in Sergipe, Brazil

    This study examined the use of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AASs) among bodybuilding athletes in Sergipe, Brazil, revealing a high prevalence of AAS use regardless of socioeconomic status. The survey included individuals over 18 years old participating in regional or state competitions. Significant findings showed that 74.3% of athletes had medical follow-up, with a notable correlation between higher education and medical supervision. Commonly used substances included Sustanon 250, Nandrolone Decanoate, and Testosterone. Acute side effects reported were acne (33.8%), irritability (32.1%), alopecia (23.7%), and nervousness (23.7%), while chronic effects included arterial hypertension (36.0%), liver disease (28.0%), and cancer (8.0%). The study highlights the need for awareness campaigns about the risks of AAS use among athletes.
