TLDR Scalp psoriasis treatments like strong corticosteroids and vitamin D3 analogues are effective, especially when combined.
The 2009 document reviewed the condition of scalp psoriasis, which affects a significant portion of psoriasis patients, and the various treatments available at the time. It highlighted the psychological impact of the condition and the need for individualized treatment plans. The document noted that potent corticosteroids and vitamin D3 analogues were particularly effective, especially when used in combination, as demonstrated in a study with 110 patients showing greater efficacy at 8 weeks. Fluocinolone acetonide in oil and clobetasol propionate in shampoo were superior for moderate to severe cases, and vitamin D analogues had been effective since their introduction in 1992. The document also mentioned other treatments like phototherapy, keratolytics, coal tar, antifungals, and systemic treatments, emphasizing the preference for less greasy and more patient-friendly topical vehicles. Long-term studies were called for to better evaluate treatment impacts on quality of life.
