TLDR Combining oral methylprednisolone with microneedle radiofrequency improves hair growth in alopecia areata but may cause pain and side effects.
A study involving 40 patients with alopecia areata evaluated the efficacy of combining oral methylprednisolone with fractional microneedle radiofrequency. The study group, receiving the combined treatment, showed significant improvements in hair density and mature hair rate at weeks 12 and 24 compared to the control group, which received only oral methylprednisolone. However, increased hair shedding was noted after 24 weeks. While the combined treatment was effective, it was associated with pain during microneedle sessions and various adverse effects from corticosteroids, including weight gain and acne. The study concludes that fractional microneedle radiofrequency is an effective adjunctive therapy for severe alopecia areata when used with oral methylprednisolone.
