TLDR People with alopecia areata often have lower vitamin D levels than healthy people.
The document reports on a study examining the association between alopecia areata (AA) and vitamin D levels. The study was a hospital-based case-control study with 30 subjects in each group, comparing serum vitamin D levels in patients with AA to healthy controls. The study found that the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was significantly higher in the AA group (83.3%) compared to the control group (53.3%), with a p-value of .01. The mean serum vitamin D level was also significantly lower in the AA group compared to the control group, with p-values of .06. However, the study did not find a statistically significant correlation between serum vitamin D levels and the severity of AA, as measured by the Severity of Alopecia Tool (SALT) score and AA grade, with p-values of .89 and .59, respectively. The study suggests that there may be value in vitamin D supplementation for AA patients, but recommends further research with a larger sample size before generalizing this recommendation.
