TLDR Topical estrogens improved hair growth in about half of the patients.
The study from 1974 investigated the treatment of androgenetic alopecia in 50 patients, both male and female, aged 19-52 years, using topical estrogens and corticosteroids. Clinical improvement was noted in 52% of the patients, as evidenced by a decrease in the telogen rate. Additionally, there was a slight increase in the anagen hair count in many patients. The study suggested that estrogens might mitigate the impact of endogenous testosterone on hair follicles, although the role of corticosteroids remained unclear.
