TLDR The enzyme from Bacillus cereus can be used in detergents and leather processing.
The study investigated an alkaline protease from a thermophilic Bacillus cereus strain, focusing on its isolation, characterization, and potential applications. The enzyme was optimized for production by adjusting various conditions and purified to reveal a molecular weight of 58 kDa. It showed optimal activity at pH 7.5 and 60°C, with stability up to 70°C and activity across a pH range of 6.0–9.0. The protease effectively removed non-leather forming structures from animal skins and stains from fabrics, demonstrating compatibility with commercial detergents. It also released peptides from natural proteins, suggesting potential for industrial use.
