Adjuncts to Scalp Reduction Surgery: Intraoperative Tissue Expanders and Hyaluronidase

In the 1991 study, scalp reduction surgery was enhanced by using intraoperative tissue expanders and the addition of hyaluronidase to the local anesthetic. The study involved 20 patients and demonstrated that intraoperative tissue expansion increased the amount of excised scalp by 20-30% over standard reduction techniques. The use of hyaluronidase facilitated the diffusion of the anesthetic, improving anesthesia and making dissection easier. These two adjuncts to scalp reduction surgery were found to be beneficial, with intraoperative tissue expansion also reducing the number of required surgeries for crown alopecia by allowing more bald scalp to be resected in a single procedure.
