TLDR Transgender patients on hormone therapy experience more acne and hair loss, but less skin inflammation.
A retrospective comparative cohort study found that transgender patients on hormone therapy have a higher prevalence of acne and androgenetic alopecia, but a lower prevalence of atopic dermatitis compared to cisgender patients. Healthcare providers should be aware of these dermatologic conditions in transgender patients and provide appropriate management. Masculinizing hormone therapy increases the likelihood of acne and androgenetic alopecia, while feminizing hormone therapy decreases the likelihood of androgenetic alopecia. The risk of atopic dermatitis decreases for patients on masculinizing hormone therapy. Further research is needed to better understand the impact of hormone therapy on these conditions.
