The review explored the potential health benefits of jujube (Ziziphus jujuba) as a supplement for anemia, highlighting its rich content of flavonoids, polysaccharides, and triterpenic acids. These compounds were found to have hematopoietic functions, potentially aiding blood production by stimulating erythropoietin (EPO) expression, crucial for red blood cell production. Jujube also demonstrated immune-modulatory and anti-inflammatory properties, and its iron and vitamin C content contributed to anemia prevention. Animal studies showed improved hematological parameters and increased EPO production with jujube extract. Despite its traditional use and safety, further studies were needed to confirm these effects in humans, and the specific mechanisms required more investigation.
