TLDR Modified laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy effectively controls diabetes and treats obesity with minimal complications.
The study investigated the effects of modified laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (MLSG) on 150 individuals with type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. After 24 months, 86.6% of patients achieved normal glycemic levels, with improved serum insulin and glycosylated hemoglobin levels, and all patients stopped using insulin, though 3 required oral hypoglycemics. The average weight loss was 44.6% for those with a BMI <45 kg/m² and 58% for those with a BMI >50 kg/m². Partial hair loss occurred in 14% of cases, linked to low serum zinc levels. The MLSG was deemed safe, with a low morbidity rate (2.7%) and no surgical mortality, effectively aiding in diabetes control and obesity treatment.
