Hair Chemical Use And Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: A Case-Control Study
May 2024
Hair chemical use was common among females with SLE and did not differ significantly from controls, showing no association with the development of SLE. However, prior use of hair chemicals, especially chemical hair straighteners, was significantly linked to an increased risk of cutaneous manifestations such as malar rash, photosensitivity, and alopecia. Further research is needed to explore specific chemicals and usage patterns as potential triggers for SLE manifestations.
